A quartet led by Pablo Ziegler repeatedly broke my heart at Polsky Theatre on Saturday.  The sadly elegant music of the Quartet for New Tango sounded as if it was inspired by the brevity of lasting love affairs that are inevitably cut short by mortality.

Ziegler was the pianist in Astor Piazzolla’s groundbreaking Quinteto Tango Nuevo in the 1980s.  I was among the thousands of converts who marveled at the Argentinian ensemble’s landmark 1986 albumTango: Zero Hour.

Saturday’s concert for an audience of about 300 opened with what might have been a sly tribute to Kansas Ci...

The tango is a dance — and a music — of romance, with all the range of emotions that implies, from tentative introductions and tender courtship to passages of pure joy, passionate embrace and flaring tempers, even violence.

No one embodies the art of the tango better than pianist Pablo Ziegler’s Quartet for New Tango, which performed a breathtaking two-hour concert Thursday night at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.

Hector Del Curto is Ziegler’s longtime bandmate on the accordion-like bandoneon, the instrument that defines the sound of the Argentine tango. They were joined by South Korean c...

Tango music — for two pianos — will be the order of the day on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 15-16, as pianists Pablo Ziegler and Christopher O’Riley will team up for a pair of concerts. The performances begin at 8 p.m. in the Mondavi Center’s Vanderhoef Studio Theatre.

Both pianists have been here before. Ziegler played at Mondavi in April 2011 with his 12-piece band Beyond Tango. O’Riley played a pair of concerts in November 2010 featuring his own piano transcriptions of songs by Radiohead.

O’Riley told The Enterprise that he is looking forward to this collaboration.
